How to Cite "Online First Articles"
in Tourism Geographies

These are articles that appear online, but have not yet been published in print. Therefore, they do not have a volume number, issue number or associated page number.

For these articles, the article's DOI (Digital Object Identifier) should be used in place of volume, issue, and page numbers.

  • Example: Smith, J. A. (2014). Citing advance online publication: A review. Tourism Geographies. DOI: 10.1037/a45d7867.
  1. Quoted text would use the Online First page numbers, which usually start with page 1.
  2. Note that the article's year is likely to change when it is printed. In this example it might become (2015) for the citing the print version of this paper, and quoted text would use the printed page numbers. The Online First version of citing this paper, however, will retain the original year, (2014) in this case.
  3. The DOI does not change between the online first version of the paper and the print version of the paper. Many journals are starting to request inclusion of the DOI in the References Cited section.

More information on citing Online First articles is addressed on page 199 of the 6th edition of the APA Publication Manual®.

More information on the Online First approach can be found on the Taylor & Francis website.
