Description and Guidelines
Author Meets Critic (AMC) Book Reviews provide an interactive platform for fostering generative dialogue between authors and readers. Building on the American Association of Geographers Annual Meeting format, AMC Book Reviews include a book review written by the “critic” (max 1,000 words) and the Author’s response to the review (max 1,000 words). The TG book review editor facilitates the invitation, development and publication of the AMC book reviews.
Selected by the Book Reviews Editor, critics will participate in a dialogue with authors of selected books and reflect on broader issues and key themes related to tourism geography and beyond.
Annually, the book review editor will select between two and four books for review. Authors of books and Publishers may contact the Book Reviews Editor if they would like their book to be considered for review in the journal.

TG does not review autobiographies, memoirs, fiction, reference books, reprints, or revised editions. The Editorial Board reserves the right to decide as to whether or not to publish the review.

Critic/Reviewer Instructions
Book reviews should be between 800 and 1,000 words.
We encourage critical reviews written in a lively, accessible, and engaging style revolving around (but not limited to) the following themes:

  • Academic relevance: The book's contribution to existing scholarship and ongoing debates or controversies in the field of tourism geography
  • The persuasiveness of the author's arguments, originality/novelty of the topic.
  • Appropriateness, soundness, and thoroughness of theoretical frameworks, methodologies, data analysis, and information sources
  • The effectiveness and clarity of the writing style, arguments, and organization of the book
  • The relevance of the source material relative to the book's larger aims
  • The major objectives of the book and whether they have been accomplished
  • The context, background, and/or impetus for the book
  • Author’s positionality and biases in the writing style and arguments
  • Other constructive comments about the strengths and weaknesses of the book

For anthologies and edited volumes, the critique should address significant themes and connections across the collection instead of summarizing the contents of individual chapters.

The book reviews are due 90 days from receipt of the book by the reviewer.

The following information should be provided about the book at the start of each review:
Title, Author(s) / Editor(s) Name, Book Title, Publisher, Year of Publication, Published Place, Total Pages, Price and ISBN.

Include the following at the bottom of the review: Your Name, Your Program/Department and University, Your City and Country, and Your Email Address.

The review must be uploaded on the TG Manuscript Central.

Author Instructions

After approval by the Book Reviews Editor, the critique for the book will be forwarded to the author for a response. Please note that the idea of responding to the critic’s comments is to foster generative academic dialogue and meaningful conversation.

  • The author's responses are expected to be not more than 1,000 words, excluding references and figures.
  • The author is expected to address all the reviewers’ comments and questions in a clear, concise, and accessible manner.
  • The responses should be written in paragraph style and not presented in a tabular form or as bullet points.
  • The counter-arguments should be postulated with a concise, objective, and sound response backed up with evidence.

The author responses along with the review must be uploaded on the TG Manuscript Central for approval by the Editor.

Style and formatting
